Molting

• the process of shedding and renewing their feathers
• egg laying stops for several months during this time
• gives the hen the chance to renew and build up nutrients in their system
• hens usually molt once a year in the fall
• chicks will go through a partial molt three times as they reach maturity (we call it their awkward teenage years)
